We talk to Robert Kabica, General Manager of Przedsiębiorstwo Produkcyjno-Handlowe COOL about innovative propane formulations, the importance of the HVACR industry to the economy, as well as a wide range of products.

The HVCAR industry is a very important, if less noticeable, component of the economy.

This is correct. HVACR is an acronym when translated from English that means: heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration. Knowledge about its importance is not widely disseminated in society, especially in the case of the last component – refrigeration. Most HVAC topics are well known, so I’ll focus on the others. Definition of air conditioning in a few sentences: It can be defined as a set of technical solutions, the effect of which is to maintain, for example, in a building or its individual rooms, the climate at a certain temperature, often between 20 and 25 ° C, and sometimes, Where applicable, constant humidity as well. We deal here with both cooling and heating air. The simplest example of air conditioning is the air conditioner installed in the room, providing the occupant with a comfortable temperature. We can find larger and more complex air conditioning systems, for example, in hotels, shopping centers or office buildings. There is an industry adage that as the temperature drops where the air conditioning ends, so does the cooling. The lay pole seems to have much more knowledge about air conditioning than refrigeration, which is usually associated with the refrigerator at home and frozen foods in the supermarket. He is also unaware of how great the demand for refrigeration is and how much it is happening in the economy. In addition to the obvious need to refrigerate and freeze food, from the beginning of the production process to storage and distribution, refrigeration is also essential in the chemical, plastics, pharmaceutical, defense, automotive, machinery, healthcare, and many other industries. Cooling systems start with simple and small installations with a cooling capacity of a few kilowatts, and end with comprehensive systems with a total capacity of several thousand kilowatts, for example in a large meat production plant. In short: wherever a technological system at a particular stage of production or operation requires a lowering of the temperature, there is a properly selected device or the entire system that serves this purpose.

And at this point we come to the COOL brand.

yes. Today, PPH COOL is one of the largest Polish producers of water cooled units, condensing units and compressor units, and an important supplier of complete refrigeration systems.

Lots of complicated names. Can you briefly explain what these devices are?

Chillers, also called coolants, are devices used to cool water and non-freezing glycol mixtures, and are widely used in refrigeration. We are talking about devices from a few kilowatts of cooling power to almost a thousand kilowatts, which reflects the scale of the volume of installations that can be built with this equipment. For comparison: a domestic refrigerator has a cooling capacity of less than half a kilowatt. The cooled water or glycol mixture is distributed wherever the temperature is needed, it goes to a heat exchanger equipped with fans, which – in simple terms – push the cold into the room. This is, for example, a dining room or a refrigerated display in a supermarket or air-conditioned hotel room. Condensing units and compressor units are units that, when combined with additional elements occurring at the installation site, form a relatively small domestic cooling system. All of the above devices use a refrigerant, that is, a special gas whose thermodynamic properties allow a cooling effect. Most people are surely familiar with the word freon, which was once used to describe the gas used, among other things, in in the refrigerator, eg R134a. For environmental reasons, it has been replaced by other gases, and what is more, the types of permissible refrigerants used in the devices strongly determine the trends of changes in the industry.

Today’s world presents us with many surprises. What are the motivating factors for your development and activities?

Like every company, especially the producer company, we operate under certain market and legislative conditions. Favorable factors for us are good economic conditions, a growing economy and the wealth of society, which translates into increased consumption and demand for food products for example. Wealth creates new needs and the need to supply the market with more and more new products with higher functionality, better quality, better packaging and immediately available. Most of these new, more processed goods, in turn, require refrigeration at some point in production, transportation, or even in stores. Take, for example, restaurant fashion and the so-called “box” diet. The production process itself, storage of semi-finished products, and then ready-made batches, in addition to keeping them at the appropriate temperature during distribution, requires proper cooling. Another example is healthcare investments, construction and modernization of hospitals that require modern air conditioning systems, and medical equipment that also has refrigeration systems, such as magnetic resonance imaging. The increasingly complex and burdensome taxation, which has recently undergone frequent changes, is certainly hampered by the fact that all businesses struggle with this problem. On the other hand, there are conditions that strongly affect the direction of development of our industry, the most serious of which is the policy of climate protection and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. The above-mentioned freons are characterized by high global warming coefficients, that is, the possibility of creating a greenhouse effect, which is expressed in kilograms of carbon dioxide – that is, carbon dioxide, the gas that causes global warming. To illustrate this possibility, I would say that one of the most recent common freons, released 1 kg into the atmosphere, caused effects equivalent to the release of more than 2000 kg of carbon dioxide. The EU’s climate policy has led to the introduction of two legal regulations of key importance to producers and installers in the refrigeration industry: the Environmental Design Directive and the so-called Gas Regulation F. The first law obligates all producers of electrically consuming appliances – and refrigerants such as these – to systematically adjust their structures, with a view to Achieving a certain high efficiency, that is, reducing energy consumption, which indirectly reduces carbon dioxide emissions to the environment. The second regulation is to limit the direct greenhouse effect of the refrigerant, that is, it requires the use of such refrigerants (gases), appropriately low global warming coefficients. Using such refrigerants presents a challenge to engineers because they require special solutions and natural gases have the lowest global warming potential. propane? As far as I know, this gas is flammable!

Relax. Yes, it is flammable, but in cooling it does not burn at any time. This first. Secondly, this gas is sealed in a hermetic composition of the coolant and is subject to various thermodynamic changes imposed by the components of the device. It produces a cooling effect in the same way that prohibited gases are used. The trick is that the device is built to safety standards, and the components used are chosen correctly. The whole device is installed outside the building, it has an open structure, and in the event of an emergency leakage, the propane cannot generate dangerous concentration in the air, so it cannot ignite. The R290 machine from our AQUACOOL GREEN production line is a modern and timeless solution that Western European customers are well aware of, where pro-environmental trends have developed much earlier than our own.

What else distinguishes the company in the market?

The strength of the brand lies in the presence of its own production plant, a staff of engineers, builders, employees and a nationwide sales management scope, the core of which consists of employees with many years of experience. It is worth noting that the history of the company is more than 40 years, and today COOL is one of the largest Polish producers in this industry, many of which go to users all over the world. What sets us apart is the fact that we are leaders in the production and sale of propane coolers, which we are particularly proud of. We started our propane adventure nearly 10 years ago and today no company – at least in Poland – has such experience using this gas. We literally have few foreign competitors. For many years, the company has been cooperating with the most famous manufacturers – suppliers of components in Europe and has a very wide base of them, thanks to which it copes well with any negative economic phenomena caused by a pandemic in the form of, for example, product shortages. COOL is also an OEM that produces refrigeration equipment for other brands, which we see as one of the incentives for quality improvement and dynamic development. An obvious result of this cooperation is the ETL certificate obtained by the plant, which confirms compliance with the requirements of safety standards approved in North American countries. The company’s offering includes a variety of complementary goods essential in refrigeration and air conditioning such as fan coolers, condensers, dry coolers and many more. The offer also includes precision air conditioning systems, home air conditioners and fan coil units.

What is the reason for the competitive advantage of the COOL brand?

Our competition is fierce and the main players are the foreign producers, especially the Italians and the French. However, in the past decade already, we have decided to focus on new directions of development that will allow us to develop a market advantage. We terminated projects that unnecessarily burdened the company and did not guarantee profits in a certain future, and at the same time dispersed intellectual resources. The trends that we have adopted as an indicator of development are the environment that promotes cooling solutions and devices that save electricity, using ecological refrigerants. Hence the focus on the development of the above-mentioned propane coolers, which are our hallmark, and which, in such a wide range of performance, there is no one in Poland, and hardly anyone outside. We also presented another device for sale based on the natural carbon dioxide factor – carbon dioxide! On the basis of a wide range of products, we have been active for several years as a contractor for complete installations including design, implementation, commissioning, and most importantly: warranty and post-warranty service. The website is undoubtedly an important element of the entire strategy in implementing the main directions of the company’s activity. The service, which guarantees the continuity of operation of the installation and equipment provided, is an extremely important complement to our comprehensive offer to customers. They can be described as modern, ecological and safely operating refrigeration installations from a Polish company. I think such a package is very attractive.
