  • Good evening! The greatest movie stars and others appeared on the red carpet in front of the famous stairs at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes.

The 75th jubilee of the Cannes Film Festival is slowly coming to a close. This year’s main competition featured 21 titles, and the creators of each hope to get the Palme d’Or. Some film critics and historians have described the main prize of the Cannes event – the most prestigious award in the world of cinema – as the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for Literature.

The jury of the main competition of this year was headed by the French actor Vincent Lyndon, who may be known to the Polish audience from one of the main roles in the film Julia Docornau “Titane” – winner of the Palme d’Or last year. At his side were: Rebecca Hall, Deepika Padukone, Noomi Rapas, Yasmine Trinca, Asghar Farhadi, Ladge Lee, Jeff Nichols and Joachim Trier.

Cannes 2022. Polish dialects

During this year’s edition of the Côte d’Azur Festival, there were exceptionally many Polish dialects. First of all, Jerzy Skolimowski’s “Io” was among the films competing for the Palme d’Or. This is the sixth title in the career of the Lodz filmmaker, who is competing for the main awards in Cannes. Earlier, Skolimowski received the Grand Jury Prize in 1978 for the film “Krzyk” and in 1982 for the script “Fuchy”.

Ayo is a view of contemporary Europe from the perspective of the titular donkey. We meet him when, under the auspices of Cassandra (the insanely talented Sandra Drzymalska), he is part of a circus troupe. Then it moves to the next hands – not always the correct hand. Skolimowski came up with Robert Bryson’s “For Luck, Balthasar!” From 1966. The director himself admitted that it was the only film in which he shed a tear. “Io” is not an attempt to deal with Bryson’s story, but rather a form of paying tribute to it.

The English language debut of Agnieszka Smoczyńska “The Silent Twins” was included in the very prestigious section of Cannes Un Certain Regard. The screenplay for the film, which was loud before it was produced, was written by Andrea Seigel based on Marjorie Wallace’s book. The movie is about twins: John and Jennifer Gibbons, who are known as the “silent twins” because they have constantly refused to communicate with anyone except the other sister.

In addition, it is worth noting that one of the judges for this year’s Un Certain Regard section, which includes innovative films that go beyond the traditional way of storytelling, and which are surprising in their form, is actress Joanna College. On the other hand, in the section Cinéfondation – Short Film Competition – a short film by Olga Kłysiewicz from the Lodz Film School entitled “Tomorrow we not there” was shown.
