“Demanding, provocative, very touching.” Six minutes of applause in Cannes after Agnieszka Smoczyńska

Reactions after the premiere of Agnieszka Smoczyńska “Silent Twins” Six-minute applause, enthusiastic entries on social media, and great ratings. “A poignant and poignant piece of versatile craftsmanship,” American screenwriter, producer, producer and showrunner David Jenkins sums up.

All directors dreamed of such a reception of the film in Cannes. You can see endless thunderous applause and a huge movement of viewers in the movie from the premiere of “Silent Twins” circulating on social media.

The word “revelation” appeared in the reports of accredited journalists in Cannes. Some directly ask: why was the film not included in the main competition? Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian, known for his harsh judgments, compares “Silent Twins” to the famous drama “Heavenly Beings” starring Kate Winslet.

Everyone asserts that the film’s greatest strength is its unorthodox approach to telling a true story. This is what the Polish director is famous for.

On the site “Cinemaniac.fr” which is very popular in France, immediately after the screening of the film Agnieszka Smoczyńska appeared a comment telling all about the acceptance of the film in Cannes: .) Feelings that were missing in the paintings of the masters ”- writes its author.

Let’s add the story itself in the movie: it’s true that it has an element of awesomeness. “The Silent Twins” – this is also the title of Marjorie Wallace’s book, on the basis of which Andrea Siegel wrote the script – is the story of the black twins, June and Jennifer Gibbons, who refused to contact the world and communicated only with each other. They had an incredibly strong bond, “as if they were one person in two bodies.” They also recognized themselves as authors of books and poems.

The attempt to separate the girls led to psychological disturbances in both of them. As teenagers, they committed numerous acts of vandalism, leading to a 10-year stay at the infamous Broadmoor Psychiatric Hospital. This one ruined their love life irreversibly.

Agnieszka Smoczyńska told this story from the sisters’ perspective. The film’s producer confirms that it was the director’s priority. “Not to treat the heroines as strangers, but to match the way they think and act.” Although this story, apart from the book, also contains art and a documentary, no one has looked at it this way before,” he explains. It’s hard to underestimate Smoczyńska’s tough stance,” says Guardian critic Peter Bradshaw.

Nor did the director succumb to “the temptation to pity the mentally ill by treating them as untouchable holy spirits.” The tenderness we see suggests a shared experience that none of us can appreciate,” Tim Grierson wrote on Screen Daily.

The director’s challenge was to show the amazing inner world of the twins, full of wide imagination. I did this with the help of stop motion animations and music to suggest their imaginative, semi-fictional way of seeing their surroundings.

In the lead roles we see Marvel’s Black Panther star and actress Letitia Wright (also a co-producer) and Tamara Lawrence. Critics assure that without their excellent creations, the film would not be very moving.

high and higher and higher

Agnieszka Smoczyńska is best known for “Dancing Girls”, which was a hit in America, although it was not fully appreciated in Poland. This camp music blend of comedy and horror, which took home an award for the first time at the festival in Gdynia, was awarded at Sundance.

In 2018, the premiere of her second film “Fugue”, which for a change was a touching psychological drama. Together with Agnieszka Holland, Kasia Adamik and Olga Chajdas, she was also responsible for the first Polish series for Netflix – “1983”.

The Silent Twins is her third film and also her first English-language film. Andrea Siegel, who wrote the script based on a book by Marjorie Wallace, had seen Dancing Girls in the States and knew she had found a way out for her project. Smoczyńska admits that after reading the script, she immediately felt a connection with the heroes of the film, which is most important for her in the case of each film she works on.

And the “Guardian” reviewer confirms that he can be seen in the last movie. The Silent Twins are surprised by the creator’s “unwavering sympathy for the characters, from start to finish,” says Bradshaw.

The film, a Polish-British co-production, has already found distributors at the highest level. The famous Focus Features will handle its distribution in the US market, and Universal Pictures International will be responsible for its global distribution. Focus Features is a company that distributes art cinema in the United States that often competes for Academy Awards. Often with the best possible result.

So the Polish director is flying really high. Higher and higher with each movie.
