How was Alexei Navalny poisoned, and who actually did it? The opponent himself tries to answer these questions in the wonderful documentary “Navalny”. The director accompanies the opposition activist, his family and the team from his discharge from the German Hospital in November 2020 until his arrest in Russia. The movie premieres on TVN24 and TVN24 GO on Sunday, May 22 at 12.45.
In August 2020, the media circulated exciting reports and recordings. Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny collapses in pain on a plane from Tomsk to Moscow. It turned out to be poisoned. The plane had to land in Omsk in Siberia, and there Navalny Prison. Later he was transferred to a clinic in Germany.
In a German hospital, he recovers and begins to wonder who might be responsible for his failed assassination attempt. Meanwhile, German specialists reported that Noviczok was found in his blood. Navalny begins the search for the culprits. Accompanying him is his wife and closest associate and investigative journalist Christo Grosev, who is associated with the British Journalists Association Bellingcat.
Director Daniel Rohr watches the team as they take us behind the scenes of an exciting case. The result is an intimate portrait of a husband, father, politician, and charismatic leader. Talented and determined. The production combines elements of excitement and absurdity characteristic of comedy with elements of tragedy.
“Navalny” directed by Daniel Rohera premieres on TVN24 and TVN24 GO on Sunday, May 22 at 12.45.
The documentary “Navalny” on TVN24 GO will be available until June 21.
The production will also be available on TVN on June 28 at 11:15 p.m.
Navalny called potential bombers
Other than speaking to an opposition activist, the director of the documentary Navalny uses archival data and entries in social media. We have access to the investigation all the time, during which Alexei Navalny calls the bombers and asks them “what went wrong.” To get contacts, it uses the resources of the dark network.
Most of the callers hang up, but one of them unexpectedly decides to answer Navalny’s questions. The phone call takes about 50 minutes. Calling it irresponsible on the part of the potential bomber is an understatement.
Why Alexei Navalny returned to Russia?
Navalny is currently serving a nine-year prison sentence in a high-security penal colony in Russia. He was found guilty of “embezzlement” and contempt of court. It is clear to the Western world that the evidence was fabricated by Putin’s corrupt government. In prison, Navalny is persecuted and harassed. I strike.
So why, in January 2021, did he decide to board a plane from Berlin to Moscow? Daniel Rohr also tries to answer this question in his documentary. The dissident sacrificed his marriage and freedom and risked his health and life in the fight for his own values and vision of Russia.
Will it even pay off? According to Rohir, Navalny is a conscious politician and knows what he is doing. His strength lies in his ability to manage social media and connect with more than 30 million followers who follow him online.
It will be closed as long as Putin is in power.
On the day of the document’s world premiere, January 25, 2022, the Russian authorities added Alexei Navalny and several of his comrades to the list of “terrorists and extremists”. Many of his supporters had to leave Russia, and some were arrested. The document shows how Russian propaganda is currently trying to discredit exhibitions, or even erase them from history.
In February 2022, the court began to consider another criminal case against Alexei Navalny on charges of embezzlement and contempt of court. So, is there any chance of leaving the penal colony early? The director himself answers this question in the negative.
– I think he will spend many years in prison. Will it be five years, ten or twenty? It will be closed down as long as Putin is in power, Rohr said in an interview.
“When he spoke to me, I felt like I was the only person in the room”
What does Alexei Navalny look like in private? – I do not want to sanctify him, but there are things that impressed me very much. He has an amazing energy that often accompanies talented politicians. When he spoke to me, I felt like I was the only person in the room, says Rohr.
The director admits that he was surprised by Navalny’s interest in him. He mentions conversations on various topics, such as Canadian politics. Rohr also described him as “cute” and “funny”.
When it comes to shaping the image in the media, Navalny is a genius. I had to be careful because he obviously had an idea of my movie and was trying to manipulate me – he admits.
“When we stop worrying about it, the bad guys win”
While Navalny was lost in a penal colony, Putin decided to attack Ukraine. The opposition in Russia has practically no voice anymore. So Daniel Rohr spoke about the important message of his document.
I would like viewers to remember that when we stop caring and not caring, the bad guys win. Be it in Brazil, Hungary, Turkey, Russia, China or the USA. Alexey reminds us to stay active. “I hope people remember that when they think of Alexei,” Rohr says.
