According to an HBO press release, directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio, “George Carlin’s American Dream” describes “the life and work of legendary comedian George Carlin.” Carlin died in 2008 at the age of 71 of heart failure after a series of heart attacks in his life in 1978.

The press release continues:

Nicknamed “the dean of comedians for the counterculture”, Carlin’s career spanned a half-century, during which he was the star of 14 HBO comedy shows and appeared on The Tonight Show more than 130 times, constantly evolving over time and remaining in strong resonance until his death in 2008 and beyond. Carlin’s ability to bring social problems together has proven incredibly prophetic, and many of his works resonate today with disturbing (and still funny) clarity. The documentary looks at a cultural chameleon remembered as one of the most influential comedians of all time.

The documentary traces Carlin’s path to fame and opens an intimate window into Carlin’s personal life, including his childhood in New York, his long battle with drugs that affected his health, his struggle with the law, and his love affair with Brenda. His wife of 36 years and second marriage to Sally Wade. Intimate interviews with daughter Carlin and Brenda Kelly Carlin give unique insight into her family’s history and the enduring love and partnership between her parents.

The two-part document contains “a treasure trove of never-before-seen archival material, including archival films, photographs, sound recordings, letters, memoirs, and interviews with Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Patton Oswalt, Stephen Colbert, Bill Burr, Bette Midler, W. Kamau Bell, Sam Jay , Judy Gould, Jon Stewart and others. They join them to share their memories of Carlin, daughter Kelly Carlin, manager Jerry Hamza, second wife Sally Wade, and others.”

In an interview with Forbes, Apatow said Carlin was the type who looked at what was popular in comedy and tried to take it to the next level.

“I think that’s what we all like [artists] Those who do great work all their lives always look at what’s going on in the culture. They do not want to be a relic of another era. Just like some rock musicians who heard punk rock and changed what they do, George Carlin saw Sam Kinison and thought, “Oh, I have to improve my playing. This is going in a new direction,” Apatov said, adding, “That’s why it’s remained a big part of culture for the rest of his life. He didn’t rest on his laurels; he was an artist who tried to go deeper and rise to the next level.”

Part One of “George Carlin’s American Dream” airs Friday, May 20 at 8:00 PM EST, and Part Two on Saturday, May 21 at the same time, both on HBO.
