Let’s check it out!

Where do you get it?

Xiaomi Watch S1

We can get a silver version of the smartwatch without any problems in most electrical stores in our country and, of course, at mi-home.pl. The black version is available in fewer stores, but we will continue to buy it without any major problems. Starting price is PLN 1049. Interestingly, the watch was added as a gift when pre-purchasing new smartphones from the Xiaomi 12 line. Unfortunately, the presale has already ended.

Unfortunately, Xiaomi Watch S1 is currently not available in any offer operated in Poland.

In the box, apart from the smartwatch, we find only the documentation, an additional strap and a USB charging cable. Of course, the charger itself must be purchased on our own.

Style and class above all

Sophistication and elegance begin with the box itself, which, despite its cardboard, is made of brushed aluminum. It looks really good. The smartwatch itself is made of stainless steel (including two buttons) and sapphire glass, a standard in both elegant and classic traditional watches. Only the bottom of the device is made of plastic. Furthermore it The housing is water resistant 5 ATMIt is also standard on this type of watch. You can choose a silver version with a light brown calfskin strap, or a black version with a black and brown strap (black on top and brown on the inside). Also an option is a gray belt made of fluorinated rubber, which can be found in the kit.

I must admit that Xiaomi Watch S1 looks very elegant for a smartwatch and we can wear it even with an expensive suit without the slightest bit of shame. With one small caveat. The tip of the shirt should be very loose to easily cover the thick case of the smartwatch. Otherwise it will look bad. Of course, the watch can also be worn with sneakers and tracksuits and it will still look great. The look is insanely universal.

Of course, it is not the only construction of this type at a similar price. Here, the competition is, for example, Huawei Watch GT 3 Classic, but there are not so many smartwatches on the market where classic style and elegance are the hallmarks.

Wearing comfort and easy readability of the Xiaomi Watch S1 screen

The watch measures 11 x 46.5 x 46.5mm and isn’t the lightest, weighing around 52g. However, it is quite acceptable, because the smartwatch is intended mainly for men who will not be bothered by such weight and dimensions.

I was wearing this smartwatch very comfortably, and the leather did not sweat much from the strap, despite the hot days. Of course, it’s not that she didn’t sweat at all, but everything was normal and didn’t make me want to take the device off quickly.

As for the screen, it is made with AMOLED technology, its size is 1.43 inches (466 x 466 pixels), it is refreshed at a frequency of 60 Hz, and the manufacturer declares a brightness of 450 nits. It was this 450 nits that bothered me the most and wondered if the watch face would be readable in the bright May sun. Fortunately, my fears were wrong – and readability in the sun wasn’t an issue. I have no objections to other screen parameters – after all, it is AMOLED. It is protected by sapphire glass, which I wrote about earlier.

Performance, unfortunately, is a little limp…

Let’s start with the basics. The upper button is used to activate the clock and menu, and the lower button is used to quickly enter the training mode. Although they both rotate, it’s impossible to navigate the menu or scroll through the settings – it’s a pity. It is also impossible to assign functions to them other than those assumed by the manufacturer.

Unfortunately, you cannot install any additional apps on the watch. for this reason NFC capabilities are limited here, because the watch only supports payments via Xiaomi Pay and with MasterCard … I could not test the payment myself, because both payment cards are Visa (PKO and Santander)…

Xiaomi Pay is currently supported by mBank, Bank Pocztowy, BNP Paribas and a group of SGB cooperative banks, as well as fintechs ZEN.com and Curve.

Built-in functions include sleep monitoring, stress, heart rate, blood saturation (SpO2), steps, calories burned, weather checking, track tracking or music management (pause and switch songs). In addition, there are 117 training modes, and the watch itself can detect that we are starting to move. Unfortunately, it takes him from about 350 to 400 metres, which is a bit annoying. I walk about half a kilometer, and the clock tells me I’m walking… Beautiful. In addition, we can forget to load our music to its memory, or connect it to Google Fit. Nor will we respond to SMS.

Via Xiaomi Watch S1, you can also preview notifications from the phone, after selecting the application from which we want to receive notifications in Mi Fitness. We can also answer calls and speak using the built-in microphone and speaker. The sound quality is really great, but the solution has some downsides. The first is that the name of the calling contact is not displayed on the screen – only the number is displayed. The second is the problem of returning to the chat menu if we are going to adjust the volume during the conversation. We hope this will be corrected with the following software updates. When it comes to customization, we can choose from dozens of available watch faces and adjust individual panels. Not much, but always something.

Clock measurements, for example in our pulse range, should of course be approximate. This is not a precise medical device. It follows from my observations, for example, that the steps are calculated correctly, but the pulse is slightly less than what is shown to me by a fixed device customized from the pharmacy. But the built-in navigation systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS) work without any problems. During the tests, she worked without any reservations. The watch does not have an EKG and does not measure blood pressure.

Mi Fitness app is the successor to Mi Fit app

The watch and the phone are connected via the Mi Fitness app. Of course, pairing is mandatory the first time you turn it on – without it we can’t use the watch even to a limited extent. The minimum requirements for the application are Android 6.0 or iOS 10. Communication is via the Bluetooth interface, and configuring the device itself is relatively quick and intuitive. There were also no problems with system updates.

From the application level, we can change and download the dials. There are a lot of them and they should satisfy most users. In the notification settings, we can choose among the programs for which we want to receive notifications on the watch, which I wrote about earlier.

On the home screen we have a live preview among others of our exercises, heart rate, step count, calories, blood oxygen levels and stress. In general, the application is clear and easy to use.

Charging and battery life

The manufacturer used a lithium polymer battery with a capacity of 470 mAh. According to his assurances, it should withstand 12 days of normal use or 24 days in energy-saving mode. Lots of theory, what does practice look like? I had to connect the watch to the charger after 7 days, but I should note that most of the time I had the maximum screen brightness. However, it seems that the manufacturer slightly overestimated the stated uptime…

Charging is done using the magnetic induction charger included in the kit. Charging from 1 to 100% takes approximately 70 minutes.

Summary – Is it worth buying Xiaomi Watch S1

If you are looking for a stylish, elegant and well-made smartwatch, then it is. Although it must be honestly admitted that most of the functions of this smartwatch are also available in much cheaper watches and bands. In turn, the competition at a price of PLN 1000 in terms of functionality often offers more, but in terms of performance in most cases, it certainly gives way to the new watch from Xiaomi. You have used the Xiaomi Watch S1 very pleasantly and if you do not want to spend a fortune on a smartwatch, and at the same time style and style are important to you, I can recommend you to buy it in good conscience. Well, unless you’re really interested in contactless payments and have a Visa card…
