Museum night. Crowds of visitors will queue again

Museum Night is undoubtedly one of the most popular cultural events in Poland. On that night, museums, art galleries, and other cultural institutions open their doors to visitors for free or for a small fee.

Undoubtedly, the Night Tour has its charms – every version is very popular. Museum Night dates back to 1997 – the first edition of the event was held in Berlin. It turned out to be so successful that Paris and Amsterdam followed the German capital and organized their own events. Currently, Museum Night is hosted annually in more than 120 European cities.

In Poland, the first Night of Museums was held in 2003 and organized by the National Museum in Pozna. Later, Krakow and Warsaw joined the event. Since then, Museum Night in its traditional form has been held only once – in 2020 the event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Museums and other cultural institutions moved their activities online – and began inviting viewers on virtual tours.

Museum Night 2022 in Poland is fast approaching. Although the event will take place on May 14, the Grand Tour can be arranged a night earlier. What city will be the first to invite you for a night tour? According to tradition, it will be the city of Krakow.

Most branches in Poland are open from 6:00 pm to 3:00 am. In some cases, pre-registration is required to visit exhibitions and inaccessible places or participate in workshops.

Below we present a few selected cities and museums worth visiting during this year’s Museum Night. It’s worth planning a great night tour now!

Museum Night will take place in Krakow on May 13th. The “must see” list definitely includes the Wawel Royal Castle, where you can visit private royal apartments for a symbolic zloty, and Hetman Sahjdakzny’s sword will also be on display. A lot will happen in the National Museum in Krakow – it is worth a visit, among other things to the Czartoryski Museum, where there will be a display of the reconstructed dress of Cecylia Gallerani – the famous “Lady with Ermine” by Leonardo da Vinci. The Archaeological Museum also invites you to visit its doors, where you can see, among other things, a collection of relics from ancient Egypt. It’s also worth adding the Underground of the Main Market Square to the list.

Museum Night is undoubtedly one of the most important events in Warsaw. As every year, much interest will be enjoyed, among others, by proposals from the National Museum, the Royal Castle, the Pauline Museum and the Warsaw Uprising Museum. In the National Museum, among other things, an ancient art collection containing relics from ancient Egypt, in the Faras Gallery, preserved paintings from an ancient church now located under the waters of Lake Nasser. At Royal Łazienki Park, you will be able to stroll through illuminated gardens. It is also worth visiting the Palace of Culture and Science – the city invites residents to get free tickets to the observation deck.

Museum Night will also come to the capital of Lower Silesia. This year, it is worth visiting such institutions as the State Archives, the Botanical Garden, which will invite spectators to an evening walk with torches, the NOT Building, where you will be able to see the historical interiors, the Odra Centrum or the Centennial Hall Visitor Center with an interactive exhibition on the history of this place . Visitors can also visit the Hydropolis, Poland’s only museum dedicated to water. Experts will take visitors on a journey through the depths of the ocean and tell about the underwater creatures.

And now we move to Katowice. The Silesian Museum, built on the site of the former Katowice mine, invites you to visit all the permanent exhibitions and peek into the inaccessible places daily. In Church Street. Michael the Archangel, Great Tour of Historic Interiors, Including Canopy Tower, Planned. The Silesian Center for Freedom and Solidarity invites you to visit the mine, the Mioch party and the Upper Silesian Ethnographic Park in Chorzov – a mysterious new version of the “Museum of Horror in the Open Air”.

Other Polish cities also participate in Museum Night, so it is impossible to list all the attractions that they prepared. If we are in Poznan, it is worth a visit to the Croissant Museum. This is a chance to see how the famous St. Martin’s croissants are made, and finally check their taste.

In Rzeszów, it is impossible to miss the Museum of Bedtime Drawings, where the exhibition “Winnie the Pooh and Friends” will open. Plus, the facility invites you to a “sleep bingo.” In Lodz, it is worth visiting the Museum of Cinematography or the Museum of the Factory, where a book on patterns will be presented, which until now was hidden in warehouses.

A lot will also happen in Gdansk. GDAŃSK – The Archaeological Museum invites you to take a night tour of the Romanesque vaulting in the basement of a former Dominican monastery. In turn, in the silos of the “Blue Lamb”, a realistically created medieval street will await, on which the minds of the former lives of the inhabitants will take place.
