Exhibition “Two Gentlemen Bingo”. RDC
“Two Gentlemen Pingo” is the title of the gallery of artists and friends of Marcin Kołpanowicz and Krzysztof Izdebski-Cruz under the artistic pseudonym Kriz Cruz. Pictures filled the interior of the lobby at the Senator’s Building in Warsaw at Bielańska 12.
The title of the exhibition is no accident. – It is a reference to the work of Zbigniew Herbert that we greatly appreciate. Mr. Cogito’s message is the motto with which we correspond. It was Herbert who created this figure of Mr. Cogito, that is, a modern man, as the poet himself said, struggling with despair. His name refers to Descartes’ sentence “Cogito ergo sum”, and our calling became “Pingo ergo sum”, or “I paint, therefore I am” – Marcin Kołpanowicz tells the radio for you.
A spark can come at any time
In the exhibition you can admire, among others, “The Traveller’s Course” or “The Seasons” by Marcin Kolbanovich.
– This is a tetraptych with a classic theme of the seasons. I wanted to approach it in a new way, so I drew four winged dancers, each embodying a different season. In their clothes they refer to folklore, even though each one of them represents a different race and a different type of beauty. – The artist suggests.
The painter reveals that his paintings are often a stepping stone to new ones. – Before I sit in front of the board, there is a brainstorming process. At any moment, something can cause an association to arise. My paintings are also often a springboard for new paintings. I see opportunities to develop in them, one image becomes a stepping stone to the other – Says.
Life is a break in the drawing
On the other hand, Kriz Cruz offers dozens of works made in the technique of oil and pastel. There are also some unfinished paintings on display.
– Our painting is a never ending story. We draw all the time with breaks for sleep and life. Our life is art, and the rest is a break from this life, this art. This particular day, when we go to the scenes with these works, is a special day. It’s a holiday, but it’s also a major concern, because the man with his wounds, and his exposed intestines, chooses to see the viewer and show him everything. – says Chris Cruz.
Ukraine in art
In the central part of the gallery, in a thick golden frame, is a painting of a woman with the title “02/24/2022”. As the painter admits, after Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, he could not think of anything else. – I started to reveal what was bothering me. I was working with a model from Chernihiv. I started reviewing the diagrams and notes I was taking at the time. I started drawing without much plan. This continued until I finished drawing Chris Cruz says.
There is a young Ukrainian woman in the picture with a blue and yellow cloth. – In this painting, I show this tenderness and a new, modern, young democracy being created there and seeing itself on the side of Western culture, not Eastern. After all, Ukraine is not yet 18 years old. This powerful struggle to assimilate into Western culture continues to some extent this time – Explains the artist.
Moses and life
Some works were created as part of the “Metamorphoses” series. On some of them you can enjoy dark brown eyes. This is Natalia Kross – a muse, in particular the artist’s wife.
– She agreed on terms, saying we’ll see how it turns out. It turns out it’s pretty cool that we have one plus one equals more than two. We decided that there was no other choice for us but to work together, because it brings great results and mutual benefits. Krzysztof can create his art, and I help him with that – says Natalia Cross.
The exhibition can be visited from May 14 to 22 at 12 Bjellica Street. Free admission.
