Galaxy A53 5G review – review. Will the smartphone repeat the success of its predecessor?

In 2021, the Galaxy A52, A52 5G, and A52s turned out to be real results for Samsung. Very good price, with beautiful AMOLED screens, water resistance, good battery and optics. And most importantly – all with mid-range Qualcomm processors from the 700 line.

The processors were the missing element that completely completed the company’s puzzle in this price bracket. Because the manufacturer has used Exynos so far, which was / ok in the top class, but not in the mid-range. The smoothness, performance and battery suffered.

In addition, Samsung priced the A52 series smartphones well, and a year later they became even more attractive, because their price has fallen and you can get them, depending on the model, for PLN 1,400 or PLN 1,200.

How does today’s novelty, the A53, look against this background? in the middle. Starting from the price – you have to pay PLN 1999 for it. That’s a lot, fortunately, initially, Samsung is adding Galaxy Buds 2 headphones worth PLN 649 in the promotion. However, at some point the promotion will end and the price will remain…

Second – the processor is Exynos 1280. Why not the Snapdragon? I don’t know, maybe it’s for a market shortage, maybe using my own would be a cheaper solution. Anyway, when I put my business card in the machine, I got worried. Is this true? I invite you to read.

Galaxy A53 5G – Build

We get the smartphone in a small box with a USB cable and a pin to remove the SIM tray and documents as well as the device. Of course, ecology, we have to take care of the charger or the box ourselves.

The materials are the same as in last year’s models, so we are still treated with high-quality carpet plastic and a plastic frame imitating aluminum. The appearance of the Camera Island has not changed either, it is still a small island that forms a single whole with its appearance. The number of networks is also the same.

At the bottom there is a slot for two SIM cards, one of which can be replaced with a memory card with a capacity of up to 1 TB. Next to it is a USB-C input and one of the two speakers – the other is integrated with the speakerphone for calls and is placed in a recess above the screen. They play “meat” and are very nice, the bass is a little louder and deep, and the third is high notes.

On the right side, at the ideal height, there is a button for turning on the device and above it a larger button – for adjusting the volume.

Compared to last year’s model, the phone has been “castrated” by inserting a headphone mini-jack. On the plus side, it should maintain the IP 67 standard – that is, resistant to dust and immersion in water for up to half an hour.

Galaxy A53 5G – Offer

The screen is usually one of the strongest features of Samsung phones and that is also the case here. It is a 6.5 inch Super AMOLED display. Colors are strong and saturated, viewing angles are perfect. The maximum brightness is 800 nits – it’s fine, although several times in very strong sunlight I had to cover the phone with my hand to be able to use it. But maybe I’m just spoiled, including. By a Samsung S22 I used recently and where the max brightness was much higher. Here, however, we have a medium shelf.

In the settings, we will select the monitor mode (live or natural) and white balance using the RGB color palette.

There are two refresh rates to choose from – 120 Hz or 60 Hz – no adaptive refresh.

In the center of a small hole we have a selfie camera. It’s a pity that Samsung constantly puts it in a silver frame, which makes it more visible than the competition.

The tires are quite thick – and the chin is noticeably larger. It may not look very modern, but it is very practical – there is no accidental pressure on the screen. For example, I prefer practicality to beauty.

There is no notification LED, but there is AoD information displayed on the blank screen. You can choose one of the many designs directly from the device or from the Galaxy Store. Notifications appear from all applications. You can also control multimedia from the dimmed screen level.

A fingerprint reader is placed on the screen. As with the Samsung in the middle shelf – it’s not the fastest, but if we learned to hold our finger a little longer, we shouldn’t have any problems with it.

Facial recognition is a little worse. If we are not completely in front of the camera, it will take a little longer or the reading will fail and you will have to repeat it.

There is a double tap to turn the display on or off. Unfortunately, we don’t have any protective chips glued to it.

Galaxy A53 5G – Playing

As I wrote, instead of the Snapdragon, we have the Exynos 1280. This is a new processor in the Samsung portfolio. It supports 120Hz 1080p screens, 108MP cameras, 4K recording at 30fps, 5G, Bluetooth 5.2, but WiFi 6 is missing, and in AnTuTu Benchmark the phone reaches 387773 points. That’s a slightly lower score than the Snapdragon 750 5G of the A52 5G, but it’s much better than the Snapdragon 720 of the base A52.

However, personally, I preferred to run last year’s models, especially the 5G version. It was smooth and fast there, but unfortunately there is no such thing as fluency. And that’s regardless of whether we’re set to 60 or 120 Hz. The device picks up on occasional “delays”, and it takes a long time for some apps to exit – as if the phone had ringed for the first time, only after a while, but immediately executed. It seems strange, as if the optimization device is missing. And since the smartphone is new, I do not rule out that the manufacturer will release a fix that will improve its work. But at the moment, especially for the money, there is no madness.

But the smartphone does important “other” things perfectly. Mobility – without reservation (verified on the Warsaw-Varka Warsaw route and while driving around the city). The following are supported: A-GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO and BDS.

Voice call quality – Not eligible for both parties.

NFC Signal Strength – Not eligible – Payments are made instantly, every time.

Sound quality on headphones – again ineligible. The phone pairs instantly with headphones (for me, it’s Samsung Buds Live), Dolby Atmos settings and equalizer work.

The phone supports Bluetooth 5.1, dual-band Wi-Fi and of course 5G. Equipped with sensors: accelerometer, fingerprint reader, gyroscope, geomagnetic, Hall, RGB color, virtual proximity sensor.

A big plus of the Galaxy A53 5G is practically no overheating. Hours of playing in PUBG or Asphalt 9 resulted in only a slight increase in temperature. The difference compared to the top of the line Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is almost huge. The quality of the game itself is good.

Galaxy A53 5G – Software

The smartphone is running Android 12 with One UI 4.1 overlay. At the time of testing, the security fixes were from April. Samsung promises to provide long-term support for its devices, in the case of this model it is 4 years for the system release, that is, we will finish Android 16 and 5 years of security improvements.

Compared to top-tier Samsung devices, the A53 does not support Dex – neither via cable nor wirelessly.

There is all the rest, in a nutshell: graphical changes in the appearance of the interface, integration with Windows, custom sidebar, Game Launcher, dual messaging, My Vault, navigation gestures.

Galaxy A53 5G – Photos & Videos

The set of lenses looks like this:

  • main – 64 MP, f / 1.8, 26 mm, 1 / 1.7X “, 0.8 µm, PDAF, OIS;
  • wide angle – 12 MP, f / 2.2, 123 °, 1.12 μm;
  • macro – 5 megapixel, f / 2.4;
  • depth sensor – 5 MP, f / 2.4;
  • Selfie – 32 MP, f / 2.2, 26 mm, 1/2.8 “, 0.8 µm.

In the settings we find: Entertainment mode with filters from Snapchat, photo, photo, video, professional, professional video, one shot, night, food, panorama, macro, super slow motion, slow motion and hyperlapse. At the top we have filters, animation, choice of format, turning on the shutter after a specified time, blinking and entering settings

In terms of optics, the assembly is exactly the same as the one we found on the A52 5G last year. I loved the pictures there and it’s no different here – that’s a strong point of this device.

The main lens is very powerful and saturated in color – a hallmark of Samsung. The color gamut is very good – HDR in Auto mode works great. Images in portrait mode with background blur work well, and can be adjusted afterwards. Wide angle photos have worse dynamics and less detail on the sides of the frames. Colors are less saturated with them and look a bit “dull” with the main lens.

The maximum zoom is 10x and of course it is really weak, but the 2x digital zoom is very good and the 3x and 4x zoom in good lighting is also suitable for posting on social media.

Selfie works very well.

The presence of optical image stabilization makes nighttime photos beautiful – sharp, a little bright, with a lot of detail.

We will record videos at a maximum resolution of up to 4K in the back and front. OIS plus electronic stability makes it a pleasure to watch. You can hardly see the camera shakes, the sound is captured perfectly, you can switch to a wide angle during recording, although it is not very smooth. But it is still good that such a possibility exists.

Galaxy A53 5G – Battery

Compared to last year’s model, the battery is a little “bloated” and now has 5000 mAh. Charging is 25 watts. Of course, we have to take care of the charger ourselves. Charging from zero to full charge takes about 90 minutes, which is a long time. Fortunately the discharge also takes a long time – with AoD running from 7.00 to 23.00 and a 120Hz refresh in “normal use” i.e. chatting, internet, YouTube or Netflix in the evening – I had to do it every two days. With more intense gameplay, which in my case means about 2 hours – every 1.5 hours. There is no inductive charging.

Galaxy A53 5G – Summary

Compared to last year’s A52 5G or A52s 5G, the A53 5G is, in my opinion, a less successful device. It has a worse processor, a better battery and the rest is basically the same. It is much more expensive than them. So for now, I will consider buying it only through the promotion with headphones, because they are very good and the price of the smartphone itself drops to real levels. Without it, it is better to buy last year’s models while they are still available. Especially since Samsung has to update it for a long time. Let’s hope that when stocks run out and only the A53 5G remains on the battlefield, its price will drop. Although I will repeat it as a mantra, I am afraid that in the case of smartphones they were already cheap and we will have to get used to the new reality.
